Land of the Dead

Friday 8 July 2005

There aren't many movies that cause me to head for the theater anymore; this is due to current moviemaking thinking as well as patron stupidity at all theaters these days. It was perhaps appropriate that we watched "Land of the Dead" the other night at a 10:20 pm showing and no one else was in the theater. Anyway, I have yet to write a full review, but in short, I was satisfied. Amidst this era's abundance of music-heavy, CGI-laden, un-scary, plotless "horror" movies, it's refreshing to see one of the old masters at work again. I could write an essay on the problems with modern "horror" movies, but this isn't the time. Suffice it to say that the new "Dead" movie has it all: things going bump in dark places, hordes of the walking dead, mass consumption of flesh and guts, and even social/political messages buried amidst all the violence and gore. Give it a try if you want to see how it's done properly.
